Emergency Rattlesnake Removal from a Santa Rosa Home At Taylor’s Trapping Service, rattlesnake calls are treated as a priority—especially when the snake is close to a home and in an area where people regularly walk. Recently, I received an emergency call for rattlesnake removal in Santa Rosa, California, that was a perfect example of why homeowners should keep their distance, keep an eye on the snake if it can be done safely, and call someone experienced in handling rattlesnakes. A Frantic Call About a Rattlesnake in Santa Rosa At approximately 1:00 p.m., I received a call from a woman who was understandably very concerned. She and her husband had discovered a rattlesnake along the side walkway of their home, located just off Highway 12 in Santa Rosa. She gave me the address, and I determined that I was about 50 minutes away. I was already walking out the door while I was still on the phone with her. Because rattlesnakes can disappear surprisingly quickly into landscaping, underneath structures, or into holes around a home, I asked if she or her husband could safely keep an eye on the snake from a distance until I arrived. Her husband agreed to watch it without approaching or disturbing it. I Arrived 48 Minutes Later Despite being approximately 50 minutes away when I received the call, I arrived at the Santa Rosa home 48 minutes later. The homeowner's husband was still watching the rattlesnake and was able to immediately show me exactly where it was. The snake had settled underneath the home's gas line along the side walkway. The location made perfect sense for a rattlesnake on a hot afternoon. It was on the north side of the house in a cool, shaded area, protected from the direct afternoon sun . This is exactly the type of location where homeowners need to be careful during warm weather. Rattlesnakes don't necessarily spend the hottest part of the day lying out in direct sunlight. They may seek cooler areas alongside homes, underneath vegetation, near utility lines, under decks, or beneath objects stored alongside a house. Safely Removing the Rattlesnake Once I located the snake, I was able to safely control it using my professional snake tongs. I carefully picked up the rattlesnake and secured it inside my snake bucket, allowing me to safely remove it from the property without putting the homeowners at unnecessary risk. The entire removal itself was quick and controlled. One of the biggest advantages in this situation was that the homeowners did exactly what I asked them to do: they kept their distance and kept track of the snake until I arrived. That can make a tremendous difference. If a rattlesnake disappears before I arrive, it may move underneath a structure, into thick vegetation, beneath stored materials, or into another hiding place where locating it becomes much more difficult. Reducing Rattlesnake Hiding Places Around the Home After removing the rattlesnake, I spoke with the homeowners about a few things they could do to make the area around their house less inviting to snakes. One of the most important steps is keeping side yards and walkways clear and easy to see. Overgrown vegetation, piles of leaves, lumber, equipment, stored materials, and other debris can provide excellent hiding places for rattlesnakes. Keeping these areas clean doesn't guarantee that a rattlesnake won't enter the property, but it can make snakes much easier to spot before someone accidentally gets too close. This is particularly important along side walkways, utility areas, gates, sheds, garages, and other narrow spaces where homeowners may walk without carefully looking at the ground.
